Introduction

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell us how, when, where, or to what extent something happens. Adverbs add detail and clarity to your sentences.

Types of Adverbs

  • Adverbs of Manner: Tell us how something happens.
    Example: She sings beautifully.
  • Adverbs of Time: Tell us when something happens.
    Example: He arrived yesterday.
  • Adverbs of Place: Tell us where something happens.
Example: The children are playing outside.
  • Adverbs of Frequency: Tell us how often something happens.
Example: She always wakes up early.
  • Adverbs of Degree: Tell us to what extent something happens.
Example: The water is very cold.

Forming Adverbs

Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives.
Example: quick → quickly, happy → happily

Some adverbs do not end in -ly, such as soon, often, well, fast.

Position of Adverbs in Sentences

  • Adverbs of manner, place, and time usually come after the verb or object.
