Respiration in Organisms
Welcome to the chapter on Respiration in Organisms for Class 7. In this chapter, you will learn how living things breathe, why respiration is important, and how different organisms respire in different ways. By the end of this chapter, you will understand the process of respiration and its role in life!
Introduction
Respiration is the process by which living organisms take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. It helps them get energy from food. All living things respire, but the way they do it can be different.
Why Do Organisms Respire?
- Respiration provides energy for growth, movement, and other life processes.
- It helps break down food inside the body to release energy.
Types of Respiration
- Aerobic Respiration: Uses oxygen to break down food and release energy.
- Anaerobic Respiration: Happens without oxygen, usually in some microorganisms.
Respiration in Humans
- Humans breathe in oxygen through their nose and mouth.
- Oxygen goes to the lungs, where it is absorbed into the blood.
- Carbon dioxide is removed from the blood and breathed out.
Respiration in Other Animals
- Fish use gills to take in oxygen from water.
- Insects breathe through tiny holes called spiracles.
- Frogs can breathe through their skin and lungs.
Respiration in Plants
- Plants take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide through tiny openings called stomata.
- Respiration happens all the time, even at night.
Differences Between Breathing and Respiration
- Breathing: Taking in air and giving out air (physical process).
- Respiration: Breaking down food to release energy (chemical process).
Fun Activity: Observe Breathing!
Place your hand on your chest and take a deep breath. Feel your chest move up and down. Count how many times you breathe in one minute!
Summary
- Respiration is needed for energy in all living things.
- Humans, animals, and plants respire in different ways.
- Breathing is part of respiration, but respiration also includes breaking down food.
Practice Questions
- What is respiration?
- How do fish respire?
- Name the tiny openings in plant leaves used for respiration.
- What is the difference between breathing and respiration?
- Why do living things need energy?
Challenge Yourself
- Draw and label the human respiratory system.
- List three animals and how they respire.
Did You Know?
- Some bacteria can live without oxygen!
- Your breathing rate increases when you run or exercise.
Glossary
- Respiration: The process of getting energy from food using oxygen.
- Breathing: Taking in and giving out air.
- Stomata: Tiny openings in plant leaves.
- Gills: Organs in fish for breathing in water.
- Spiracles: Tiny holes in insects for breathing.
Answers to Practice Questions
- Respiration is the process by which living things get energy from food using oxygen.
- Fish respire using gills.
- Stomata.
- Breathing is taking in and giving out air; respiration is breaking down food to release energy.
- Living things need energy to grow, move, and do all life activities.
Respiration keeps all living things alive and active. Observe how you and other organisms breathe and stay healthy!
