The Desktop

Icons: Small pictures that represent files, folders, or programs.

Working with Files and Folders

To open a file or folder, double-click its icon.
To create a new folder, right-click on the desktop or inside a folder, select New > Folder, and give it a name.
To rename, right-click the file or folder and select Rename.
To delete, right-click and select Delete. Deleted items go to the Recycle Bin.
Use Copy and Paste to move or duplicate files.

Customizing Windows 7

Change the desktop background by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Personalize.
Adjust the screen saver and themes from the same menu.
Pin your favorite programs to the taskbar for quick access.

Shutting Down and Restarting

Click the Start button, then select Shut down to turn off your computer.
To restart, click the arrow next to Shut down and select Restart.
