Comprehensive study notes for Class 6 - Input Output-Devices olympiad preparation

Input and Output Devices

Welcome to the chapter on Input and Output Devices for Class 6. In this chapter, you will learn about the devices that help us give instructions to the computer (input devices) and the devices that show us the results (output devices). By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify and explain the uses of common input and output devices!

Introduction

Computers need devices to receive information and to show results. Input devices help us enter data into the computer. Output devices help us see or hear the results from the computer.

Input Devices

Input devices are used to give instructions or data to the computer.

  • Keyboard: Used to type letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Mouse: Used to point, click, and select items on the screen.
  • Scanner: Used to copy pictures or documents into the computer.
  • Microphone: Used to record sound or voice.
  • Webcam: Used to capture photos and videos.
  • Touchscreen: Used to give input by touching the screen.

Output Devices

Output devices show us the results from the computer.

  • Monitor: Displays text, images, and videos.
  • Printer: Prints text and images on paper.
  • Speakers: Play sound and music.
  • Projector: Shows computer screen on a big wall or screen.
  • Headphones: Let you listen to sound privately.

Difference Between Input and Output Devices

  • Input devices send data to the computer.
  • Output devices receive data from the computer and show results.

Fun Activity: Find and List!

Look around your home or school. Make a list of input and output devices you see. Which device do you use the most?

Summary

  • Input devices help us enter data into the computer.
  • Output devices show us the results from the computer.
  • Both are important for using a computer.

Practice Questions

  1. Name two input devices.
  2. Name two output devices.
  3. What does a scanner do?
  4. Which device is used to print documents?
  5. How does a touchscreen work?

Challenge Yourself

  • Draw and label any three input devices and three output devices.
  • Explain the difference between a monitor and a printer.

Did You Know?

  • Some devices, like touchscreens, can be both input and output devices!
  • Early computers used punch cards as input devices.

Glossary

  • Input Device: A device used to enter data into a computer.
  • Output Device: A device used to show results from a computer.
  • Scanner: A device that copies pictures or documents into the computer.
  • Monitor: A screen that shows what is happening in the computer.

Answers to Practice Questions

  1. Keyboard, mouse (any two input devices).
  2. Monitor, printer (any two output devices).
  3. It copies pictures or documents into the computer.
  4. Printer.
  5. It works when you touch the screen to give input.

Computers need both input and output devices to work. Try using different devices and see how they help you!
