Mathematics Class 3 - Data Handling Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 3 - Data Handling olympiad preparation

Data Handling
Welcome to the chapter on Data Handling for Class 3. In this chapter, you will learn what data is, how to collect and organize it, and how to show information using tables, pictures, and graphs. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to read, make, and understand simple data charts!
Introduction
Data means information. We use data to learn about things around us, like favorite fruits, number of students in a class, or colors of cars. Handling data means collecting, organizing, and showing information in a simple way.
Collecting Data
- Ask questions to collect information. Example: "What is your favorite fruit?"
- Write down answers in a list or table.
Organizing Data
- Put the information in a table to make it easy to read.
- Count how many times each answer appears.
Example Table:
| Fruit | Number of Students |
|---|---|
| Apple | 8 |
| Banana | 5 |
| Mango | 7 |
Showing Data
- We can show data using pictures (pictographs) or bars (bar graphs).
- This helps us see the information quickly and easily.
Example Pictograph:
🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎 (Apple)
🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 (Banana)
🥭🥭🥭🥭🥭🥭🥭 (Mango)
Reading Data
- Look at the table or graph and answer questions like "Which fruit is liked most?"
- Find the biggest or smallest number in the chart.
Fun Activity: Make Your Own Data Table!
Ask your friends about their favorite color or sport. Make a table and a pictograph to show the results.
Summary
- Data is information we collect.
- We organize data in tables and show it with pictures or graphs.
- Data handling helps us understand information easily.
Practice Questions
- What is data?
- How can you collect data about your class?
- Make a table of your friends' favorite animals.
- Which fruit is liked by the most students in the example table?
- Draw a pictograph for three colors: red, blue, green.
Challenge Yourself
- Make a bar graph showing the number of books your friends have.
- Ask five people their favorite sport and show the data in a table.
Did You Know?
- Scientists use data to learn new things about the world!
- Graphs make it easy to compare information quickly.
Glossary
- Data: Information we collect.
- Table: A way to organize data in rows and columns.
- Pictograph: A chart that uses pictures to show data.
- Bar Graph: A chart that uses bars to show data.
Answers to Practice Questions
- Data is information.
- By asking questions and writing down answers.
- (Student makes a table with animal names and numbers.)
- Apple.
- (Student draws a pictograph for red, blue, green.)
Data handling helps you learn and share information in a smart way!
