Mathematics Class 3 - Geometry Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 3 - Geometry olympiad preparation

Geometry
Welcome to the chapter on Geometry for Class 3. In this chapter, you will learn about shapes, lines, angles, and how to identify and draw them. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to name different shapes, understand basic geometric terms, and use geometry in your daily life!
Introduction
Geometry is the study of shapes and spaces. We see different shapes and lines all around us—in buildings, books, and nature!
Basic Shapes
- Circle: Round shape with no corners.
- Square: Four equal sides and four corners.
- Rectangle: Four sides, opposite sides are equal.
- Triangle: Three sides and three corners.
- Oval: Looks like a stretched circle.
Lines and Angles
- Line: A straight path that goes on forever in both directions.
- Line Segment: A part of a line with two endpoints.
- Ray: A part of a line that starts at one point and goes on forever in one direction.
- Angle: Made when two lines meet at a point.
Solid Shapes
- Cube: Looks like a box. All sides are squares.
- Cuboid: Like a box, but sides can be rectangles.
- Sphere: Like a ball. Round all over.
- Cylinder: Like a can or pipe.
- Cone: Like an ice-cream cone.
Fun Activity: Shape Hunt!
Look around your home or classroom. Find objects that are circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, or solid shapes. Make a list or draw them!
Summary
- Geometry is about shapes, lines, and angles.
- We see shapes everywhere in our daily life.
- Solid shapes are 3D and have length, width, and height.
Practice Questions
- Name three basic shapes.
- What is a line segment?
- Which solid shape looks like a ball?
- How many sides does a triangle have?
- Draw a rectangle and label its sides.
Challenge Yourself
- Draw and color a cube, a cone, and a cylinder.
- Find five objects at home that are solid shapes and name them.
Did You Know?
- The wheel is a circle and is used in cars and bicycles!
- Dice used in games are cubes.
Glossary
- Geometry: The study of shapes and spaces.
- Shape: The form of an object.
- Angle: The space between two lines that meet.
- Solid Shape: A 3D shape with length, width, and height.
Answers to Practice Questions
- Circle, square, triangle (any three basic shapes).
- A part of a line with two endpoints.
- Sphere.
- Three sides.
- (Student draws and labels a rectangle.)
