Mathematics Class 4 - Computation Operations Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 4 - Computation Operations olympiad preparation

Computation Operations
Welcome to the chapter on Computation Operations for Class 4. In this chapter, you will learn how to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to use these operations to solve sums and word problems confidently!
Introduction
Computation operations are the basic math actions we use to solve problems. These include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Let’s learn how to use them!
Addition
Addition means putting numbers together to find the total.
- Example: 245 + 132 = 377
- Add numbers with or without carrying.
Subtraction
Subtraction means taking away one number from another to find what is left.
- Example: 500 - 275 = 225
- Subtract numbers with or without borrowing.
Multiplication
Multiplication means adding the same number again and again.
- Example: 23 × 4 = 92
- Multiply numbers using tables and column method.
Division
Division means sharing or grouping a number into equal parts.
- Example: 144 ÷ 12 = 12
- Divide numbers using tables and long division method.
Order of Operations
Sometimes, you need to use more than one operation in a sum. Follow the correct order:
- Do multiplication and division first.
- Then do addition and subtraction.
Example: 8 + 6 × 2 = 8 + 12 = 20
Word Problems
Use computation operations to solve real-life problems. Read the question, choose the correct operation, and solve.
- Example: If you have 3 boxes with 24 pencils each, how many pencils do you have in total? (3 × 24 = 72)
Fun Activity: Operation Race!
Make a list of sums using all four operations. Solve them with your friends and see who finishes first!
Summary
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are computation operations.
- Use the correct order of operations to solve sums.
- Practice word problems to use math in real life.
Practice Questions
- Add: 456 + 789
- Subtract: 900 - 475
