Number Sense

Welcome to the chapter on Number Sense for Class 4. In this chapter, you will learn about numbers, their properties, how to compare and order them, and how to use numbers in daily life. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to understand large numbers, place value, and use numbers confidently!

Introduction

Numbers are everywhere! We use them to count, measure, and compare things. In Class 4, you will work with bigger numbers and learn new ways to use them.

Understanding Large Numbers

  • Numbers can be very small or very large.
  • Learn to read and write numbers up to 10,000 and beyond.
  • Example: 2,345; 7,890; 10,000

Place Value

Place value tells us the value of each digit in a number based on its position.

  • Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands
  • Example: In 4,582, 4 is in the thousands place, 5 is in the hundreds place, 8 is in the tens place, and 2 is in the ones place.

Comparing and Ordering Numbers

  • Use >, <, and = to compare numbers.
  • Arrange numbers from smallest to largest or largest to smallest.
  • Example: 3,210 < 4,567

Odd and Even Numbers

  • Even numbers end with 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
  • Odd numbers end with 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
  • Example: 2, 4, 6 are even; 1, 3, 5 are odd.

Roman Numerals

Roman numerals are another way to write numbers. Example: I, II, III, IV, V, X.

Look around your home or school and write down all the numbers you see. Can you read and write them in words?
