Mathematics Class 4 - Data Handling Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 4 - Data Handling olympiad preparation

Data Handling
Welcome to the chapter on Data Handling for Class 4. In this chapter, you will learn how to collect, organize, and show information (data) in tables, charts, and graphs. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to read and make simple data tables and graphs!
Introduction
Data means information. We use data to learn about things around us, like how many students like apples or oranges, or how many cars pass by your school each day.
Collecting Data
- Ask questions to collect information.
- Count objects or people.
- Write down what you find.
Organizing Data
After collecting data, we organize it in tables or lists so it is easy to understand.
- Make a table with rows and columns.
- Write the names and numbers clearly.
Showing Data
We can show data using pictures, charts, or graphs. This helps us see patterns and compare things easily.
- Pictograph: Uses pictures to show data.
- Bar Graph: Uses bars of different lengths to show numbers.
- Tally Marks: Use lines to count and show data.
Reading Data
Look at the table or graph and answer questions about it. Find the biggest, smallest, or equal numbers.
Fun Activity: Make a Class Survey!
Ask your classmates their favorite fruit. Make a table and a pictograph to show the results.
Summary
- Data is information we collect and organize.
- We use tables, pictographs, and bar graphs to show data.
- Reading data helps us answer questions and compare things.
Practice Questions
- What is data?
- Name two ways to show data.
- How do you collect data in your class?

- Collect data about pets in your neighborhood and show it in a bar graph.
Did You Know?
