By the end of this chapter, you will be able to work with big numbers confidently and understand their importance.

Introduction

Numbers help us count, measure, compare, and solve problems. As we grow, we use bigger and bigger numbers in our daily life, such as in population, money, distance, and more.

Key Concepts

  • Numbers: Symbols used for counting and measuring.
  • Place Value: The value of a digit depending on its place in a number.
  • Face Value: The value of the digit itself.
  • Comparing Numbers: Finding which number is bigger or smaller.
  • Forming Numbers: Making the largest or smallest number using given digits.
  • Indian and International Number System: Different ways to read and write large numbers.

1. Reading and Writing Large Numbers

We use commas to make reading large numbers easier.
Indian System: 1,23,456 (One lakh twenty-three thousand four hundred fifty-six)
International System: 123,456 (One hundred twenty-three thousand four hundred fifty-six)

2. Place Value and Face Value

  • Place Value: In 4,582, the place value of 5 is 500 (hundreds place).
  • Face Value: The face value of 5 is just 5.

3. Comparing and Ordering Numbers

  • To compare numbers, start from the leftmost digit.
  • Arrange numbers in ascending (smallest to biggest) or descending (biggest to smallest) order.

4. Forming Numbers

You can make the largest or smallest number using given digits.
Example: Using 3, 7, 1, the largest number is 731 and the smallest is 137.

5. Use of Large Numbers in Daily Life

  • Counting population of a city or country
  • Measuring distance between cities
  • Dealing with money in thousands, lakhs, or crores

Fun Activity: Number Hunt!

Look for large numbers in newspapers, books, or on TV. Write them down and read them aloud using both Indian and International systems.

Summary

  • Numbers help us count, compare, and measure things in daily life.
  • Place value and face value are important for understanding numbers.
  • We use both Indian and International systems to read and write large numbers.
