Mathematics Class 6 - Understanding Elementary-Shapes Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 6 - Understanding Elementary-Shapes olympiad preparation

Understanding Elementary Shapes
Welcome to the chapter on Understanding Elementary Shapes for Class 6. In this chapter, you will learn about different shapes, their properties, and how to measure them. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify, draw, and measure basic shapes confidently!
Introduction
Shapes are everywhere around us. Understanding shapes helps us in drawing, building, and solving problems in mathematics and daily life. Let’s explore lines, angles, polygons, circles, and more!
Types of Lines
- Line: A straight path that goes on forever in both directions.
- Line Segment: A part of a line with two endpoints.
- Ray: A part of a line that has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction.
Measuring Line Segments
Use a ruler to measure the length of a line segment. The unit of measurement can be centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm).
- Place the ruler so that one end is at zero.
- Read the number at the other end of the segment.
Types of Angles
- Right Angle: Exactly 90°
- Acute Angle: Less than 90°
- Obtuse Angle: More than 90° but less than 180°
- Straight Angle: Exactly 180°
- Reflex Angle: More than 180° but less than 360°
Measuring Angles
Use a protractor to measure angles. Place the center of the protractor at the vertex and read the degree where the other arm points.
Polygons
A polygon is a closed figure made of straight lines. The sides and corners are called edges and vertices.
- Triangle: 3 sides
- Quadrilateral: 4 sides
- Pentagon: 5 sides
- Hexagon: 6 sides
Circles
- Center: The middle point of the circle.
- Radius: The distance from the center to any point on the circle.
- Diameter: The distance across the circle through the center (twice the radius).
- Circumference: The boundary of the circle.
3D Shapes
- Cube: Has 6 square faces.
- Cuboid: Has 6 rectangular faces.
- Cylinder: Has 2 circular faces and 1 curved face.
- Sphere: Has 1 curved face (like a ball).
- Cone: Has 1 circular face and 1 curved face.
Fun Activity: Shape Hunt!
Look around your home or classroom. Find objects that are cubes, spheres, cylinders, or cones. Draw and label them!
Summary
- Shapes can be flat (2D) or solid (3D).
- We measure lines with rulers and angles with protractors.
- Polygons have different numbers of sides.
- Circles have radius, diameter, and circumference.
Practice Questions
- What is the difference between a line and a line segment?
- Name a polygon with 5 sides.
- How many faces does a cube have?
- What tool do you use to measure angles?
- What is the center of a circle?
Challenge Yourself
- Draw a hexagon and label its sides and vertices.
- Find three objects at home that are cylinders.
Did You Know?
- The diameter of a circle is always twice its radius!
- A cube has 12 edges and 8 vertices.
Glossary
- Vertex: A corner point of a shape.
- Edge: A straight line where two faces meet.
- Face: A flat surface of a solid shape.
- Polygon: A closed figure with straight sides.
- Protractor: A tool to measure angles.
Answers to Practice Questions
