Mathematics Class 6 - Symmetry Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 6 - Symmetry olympiad preparation

Symmetry
Welcome to the chapter on Symmetry for Class 6. In this chapter, you will learn what symmetry means, how to find lines of symmetry in shapes, and how symmetry is used in art, nature, and design. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to identify and draw symmetrical shapes and patterns!
Introduction
Symmetry is when one half of a shape is the mirror image of the other half. If you fold a shape along a line and both sides match exactly, the shape is symmetrical.
Line of Symmetry
A line of symmetry divides a shape into two equal parts that are mirror images of each other.
- A square has 4 lines of symmetry.
- A rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry.
- A circle has infinite lines of symmetry.
- Some shapes have no lines of symmetry.
Symmetry in Letters and Numbers
Some letters and numbers are symmetrical. For example:
- Letter A has one line of symmetry.
- Letter M has one line of symmetry.
- Number 8 has two lines of symmetry.
Symmetry in Nature and Art
- Butterflies have symmetrical wings.
- Leaves, flowers, and snowflakes show symmetry.
- Many designs and patterns use symmetry to look beautiful.
Drawing Symmetrical Shapes
To draw a symmetrical shape, fold a paper and draw half the shape on one side. Cut it out and unfold to see the full symmetrical shape!
Fun Activity: Symmetry Hunt!
Look around your home or classroom. Find objects that are symmetrical. Draw them and mark their lines of symmetry.
Summary
- Symmetry means both sides are the same.
- A line of symmetry divides a shape into two equal parts.
- Symmetry is found in shapes, letters, numbers, nature, and art.
Practice Questions
- How many lines of symmetry does a rectangle have?
- Name a shape with no lines of symmetry.
- Draw the line of symmetry for the letter M.
- Give an example of symmetry in nature.
- Is the number 3 symmetrical?
Challenge Yourself
- Draw a shape with more than one line of symmetry.
- Find and draw a symmetrical pattern from your surroundings.
Did You Know?
- Snowflakes always have six lines of symmetry!
- Symmetry is used in architecture and design to make buildings look beautiful.
