Welcome to the chapter on Singular, Plural and One Word Substitution for Class 3. In this chapter, you will learn how to talk about one thing (singular) and many things (plural), and how to use one word instead of a long phrase. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to change words from singular to plural and use one word substitutions to make your English better!
Introduction
Words can tell us about one thing or many things. Sometimes, we use a single word to replace a group of words. This makes our sentences short and clear.
Singular and Plural
Singular means one. Plural means more than one.
- Book (one) – Books (many)
- Child (one) – Children (many)
- Dog (one) – Dogs (many)
- Leaf (one) – Leaves (many)
How to Make Plurals
- Add -s: cat → cats, pen → pens
- Add -es: box → boxes, bus → buses
- Change the word: man → men, mouse → mice
- Change f to ves: leaf → leaves, wolf → wolves
One Word Substitution
Sometimes, we use one word instead of a long phrase. This is called one word substitution.
- A person who writes books: Author
- A place where books are kept: Library
- A doctor who treats animals: Veterinarian
- A story of a person's life written by someone else: Biography
