Tenses: Simple Present and Past

Welcome to the chapter on Tenses: Simple Present and Past for Class 3. In this chapter, you will learn about the simple present tense and the simple past tense, how to use them in sentences, and how they help us talk about actions that happen now or happened before. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to use both tenses correctly in your writing and speaking!

Introduction

Tenses tell us when an action happens. The simple present tense is used for actions happening now or regularly. The simple past tense is used for actions that happened before.

Simple Present Tense

We use the simple present tense to talk about things we do every day or things that are true.

  • I play football.
  • She eats breakfast.
  • The sun rises in the east.

Simple Past Tense

We use the simple past tense to talk about things that happened before now.

  • I played football yesterday.
  • She ate breakfast in the morning.
  • We visited the zoo last week.

How to Change Present to Past

  • Most verbs add -ed in the past tense: play → played, jump → jumped.
  • Some verbs change completely: go → went, eat → ate.

Fun Activity: Tense Time!

Write three sentences about what you do every day (present tense). Then, change them to past tense to show what you did yesterday.
