Introduction
Articles and prepositions are important parts of English grammar. Articles help us talk about nouns, and prepositions show the relationship between nouns and other words in a sentence.
Articles: "a", "an", "the"
- a is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.
Example: a book, a car, a dog - an is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
Example: an apple, an umbrella, an elephant - the is used for specific things or things we already know.
Example: the sun, the school, the red ball
Prepositions
Prepositions are words that show the position or relationship of one thing to another.
- in – The cat is in the box.
- on – The book is on the table.
- under – The ball is under the chair.
- between – The dog is between the two trees.
- behind – The boy is behind the door.
- near – The school is near my house.
