Tenses
Welcome to the chapter on Tenses for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn about different tenses in English, how to use them in sentences, and how they help us talk about time. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to use present, past, and future tenses correctly!
Introduction
Tenses tell us when something happens—now, before, or later. There are three main tenses: present, past, and future.
Present Tense
The present tense is used to talk about things happening now or things that happen regularly.
- I play football every day.
- She reads a book.
- We go to school.
Past Tense
The past tense is used to talk about things that happened before, in the past.
- I played football yesterday.
- She read a book last night.
- We went to the park.
Future Tense
The future tense is used to talk about things that will happen later.
- I will play football tomorrow.
- She will read a book.
- We will go to the zoo.
How to Change Tenses
To change the tense, change the verb form:
- play (present) → played (past) → will play (future)
- go (present) → went (past) → will go (future)
Fun Activity: Tense Time!
Write three sentences about what you do every day (present), what you did yesterday (past), and what you will do tomorrow (future).
