Addition

Welcome to the chapter on Addition for Class 1. In this chapter, you will learn what addition means, how to add numbers, and how addition is used in your daily life. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to add numbers easily and solve simple addition problems!

Introduction

Addition means putting things together to find out how many you have in total. We use addition every day when we count toys, candies, or books.

Key Concepts

  • Addition: Putting things together to get a total.
  • Plus Sign (+): The symbol we use for addition.
  • Sum: The answer we get after adding numbers.
  • Zero: Adding zero does not change the number.

1. What is Addition?

Addition is joining two or more groups to find out how many there are in all.

Example: If you have 2 apples and get 3 more apples, how many apples do you have now?
2 + 3 = 5
You have 5 apples in total.

2. The Plus Sign (+)

The sign for addition is + (plus). We use the plus sign to show that we are adding numbers.

Example: 4 + 1 = 5

3. Adding Small Numbers

  • 1 + 2 = 3
  • 2 + 2 = 4
  • 3 + 1 = 4

You can use your fingers, objects, or pictures to help you add.

4. Addition with Objects

You can add by counting objects.

Example: You have 3 pencils. Your friend gives you 2 more pencils. How many pencils do you have now?
Count all the pencils: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
So, 3 + 2 = 5

5. Adding Zero

When you add zero to a number, the number stays the same.

  • 5 + 0 = 5
  • 0 + 7 = 7

6. Order in Addition

You can add numbers in any order and get the same answer.

  • 2 + 4 = 6
  • 4 + 2 = 6

Addition in Daily Life

  • Counting toys
  • Adding money
  • Counting people in a group

Fun Activity: Add and Draw!

Draw 2 stars. Then draw 3 more stars. How many stars do you have in total? Write the number and color the stars!

Summary

  • Addition means putting things together.
  • The plus sign (+) is used for addition.
  • Adding zero does not change the number.
  • You can add numbers in any order.

Practice Questions

  1. What is 2 + 3?
  2. If you have 4 candies and get 2 more, how many do you have?
  3. What is 1 + 5?
  4. What happens when you add 0 to 6?
  5. Add 3 and 2.

Challenge Yourself

  • Count the number of windows and doors in your house. Add them together. How many are there in total?
  • Write all the ways to make 5 using two numbers (for example, 2 + 3, 4 + 1, etc.).

Did You Know?

  • Addition is the first math operation you learn in school!
  • You can add numbers in any order and the answer will be the same.

Glossary
