Mathematics Class 2 - Length Weight-And-Capacity Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 2 - Length Weight-And-Capacity olympiad preparation

Length, Weight and Capacity
Welcome to the chapter on Length, Weight and Capacity for Class 2. In this chapter, you will learn how to measure and compare length, weight, and capacity. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to use units like centimetres, metres, grams, kilograms, litres, and millilitres to solve simple problems!
Introduction
We measure things to know how long, heavy, or much they are. Length tells us how long something is, weight tells us how heavy it is, and capacity tells us how much a container can hold.
Measuring Length
Length is how long or tall something is. We use rulers, measuring tapes, or metre sticks to measure length.
- Centimetre (cm) – used for small things like pencils.
- Metre (m) – used for bigger things like a room.
Example: The table is 1 metre long. The eraser is 5 centimetres long.
Measuring Weight
Weight is how heavy something is. We use weighing scales to measure weight.
- Gram (g) – used for light things like a chocolate bar.
- Kilogram (kg) – used for heavier things like a bag of rice.
Example: An apple weighs 100 grams. A watermelon weighs 2 kilograms.
Measuring Capacity
Capacity is how much a container can hold. We use measuring cups, bottles, or jars to measure capacity.
- Millilitre (ml) – used for small amounts of liquid like medicine.
- Litre (l) – used for bigger amounts like a bottle of water.
Example: A glass of water is 200 millilitres. A bottle of juice is 1 litre.
Comparing Length, Weight and Capacity
- Which is longer: a pencil or a ruler?
- Which is heavier: a book or a feather?
- Which holds more: a cup or a jug?
Fun Activity: Measure and Compare!
Use a ruler to measure your notebook and pencil. Use a kitchen scale to weigh a fruit. Use a measuring cup to pour water into a glass and a bottle. Which holds more?
Summary
- Length is measured in centimetres and metres.
- Weight is measured in grams and kilograms.
- Capacity is measured in millilitres and litres.
- We use rulers, scales, and measuring cups to measure things.
Practice Questions
- What unit do you use to measure the length of a pencil?
- How do you measure the weight of an apple?
- Which holds more: a glass or a bottle?
- What is heavier: 1 kilogram or 500 grams?
- How many millilitres are in 1 litre?
Challenge Yourself
- Find three things at home and measure their length, weight, and capacity.
- Draw and label a ruler, a weighing scale, and a measuring cup.
Did You Know?
- 1 metre = 100 centimetres
- 1 kilogram = 1000 grams
- 1 litre = 1000 millilitres
