Welcome to the chapter on Software for Class 4. In this chapter, you will learn what software is, the different types of software, and how software helps us use computers. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to name some software and understand why software is important for computers!
Introduction
Software is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. Without software, a computer cannot work. Software helps us play games, write letters, draw pictures, and do many other things on a computer.
Types of Software
- System Software: Helps the computer to work. Example: Windows, Linux.
- Application Software: Helps us do special tasks. Example: MS Paint, MS Word, Calculator, Games.
System Software
System software controls the computer and helps it run. The most important system software is the Operating System (OS). It helps us use the computer and run other software.

Application Software
Application software helps us do different jobs on the computer. Each application software is made for a special purpose.
- MS Paint – for drawing and coloring
- MS Word – for writing letters and stories
