Hardware
Welcome to the chapter on Hardware for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn what computer hardware is, the different parts of a computer, and how they work together. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to name and describe the main hardware components of a computer!
Introduction
Hardware is the physical part of a computer that you can touch and see. It includes all the devices and parts that make a computer work.
Main Parts of Computer Hardware
- Monitor: Shows pictures, videos, and text. It looks like a TV screen.
- Keyboard: Used to type letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Mouse: Helps you point, click, and move things on the screen.
- CPU (Central Processing Unit): The brain of the computer. It does all the thinking and calculations.
- Printer: Prints text and pictures on paper.
- Speakers: Play sounds and music.
- Scanner: Copies pictures or documents into the computer.
Internal Hardware Parts
- Motherboard: The main board that connects all parts of the computer.
- RAM (Random Access Memory): Helps the computer remember what you are working on.
- Hard Disk: Stores all your files, pictures, and programs.
- Power Supply: Gives power to all parts of the computer.
Input and Output Devices
- Input Devices: Used to give data to the computer (keyboard, mouse, scanner).
- Output Devices: Show results from the computer (monitor, printer, speakers).
Fun Activity: Label the Hardware!
Draw a computer and label its hardware parts. Try to find these parts on your own computer at home or school!
Summary
- Hardware is the physical part of a computer.
- Main hardware parts are monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU, printer, speakers, and scanner.
- Internal hardware includes motherboard, RAM, hard disk, and power supply.
- Input devices give data to the computer; output devices show results.
Practice Questions
- Name two input devices.
- What does the monitor do?
- Which part is called the brain of the computer?
- Where are your files stored in the computer?

- Draw and color a keyboard and mouse.
Did You Know?
- The first computer mouse was made of wood!
- Modern computers can have touch screens instead of a mouse and keyboard.
