Input and Output Devices

Welcome to the chapter on Input and Output Devices for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn about the devices that help us give instructions to the computer (input devices) and the devices that show us the results (output devices). By the end of this chapter, you will be able to name and use different input and output devices!

Introduction

Computers need devices to receive information and to show results. Input devices help us enter data into the computer. Output devices help us see or hear the results from the computer.

Input Devices

Input devices are used to give instructions or data to the computer.

  • Keyboard: Used to type letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Mouse: Used to point, click, and select items on the screen.
  • Scanner: Used to copy pictures or documents into the computer.
  • Microphone: Used to record sound or voice.
  • Webcam: Used to capture photos and videos.
  • Touchscreen: Used to give input by touching the screen.

Output Devices

Output devices show us the results from the computer.

  • Monitor: Shows text, pictures, and videos.
  • Printer: Prints text and pictures on paper.
  • Speakers: Play sound and music.
  • Projector: Shows computer screen on a big wall or screen.

Fun Activity: Spot the Device!

Look around your home or school. Can you find a keyboard, mouse, monitor, or printer? Make a list of all input and output devices you see!
