Welcome to the chapter on Software for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn what software is, the different types of software, and how software helps us use computers. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to name examples of software and understand their uses!
Introduction
Software is a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. Without software, a computer cannot work. Software helps us play games, write documents, draw pictures, and much more.
Types of Software
- System Software: Helps the computer to work. Example: Windows, macOS, Linux.
- Application Software: Helps us do specific tasks. Example: MS Word, Paint, Calculator, PowerPoint.
System Software
System software controls the computer and helps it run smoothly. The most important system software is the operating system.
- Operating System (OS) starts when you turn on the computer.
- It helps you use files, folders, and programs.
Application Software
Application software helps you do your work or have fun. You can use different application software for different tasks.
- MS Paint – for drawing and coloring.
- MS Word – for typing letters and stories.
- Calculator – for solving sums.
- Games – for playing and having fun.
