Introduction
Concord means agreement. In English grammar, concord refers to the correct matching of the subject and the verb in a sentence. The verb must agree with the subject in number (singular or plural) and person.
Rules of Subject-Verb Agreement
- A singular subject takes a singular verb.
Example: She goes to school. - A plural subject takes a plural verb.
Example: They go to school. - When two subjects are joined by "and", use a plural verb.
Example: Rohan and Sita are friends. - When two subjects are joined by "or" or "nor", the verb agrees with the subject closer to it.
Example: Either the teacher or the students are present. - Collective nouns usually take a singular verb.
