Question Forms
Welcome to the chapter on Question Forms for Class 9. In this chapter, you will learn how to form different types of questions in English, including yes/no questions, wh-questions, and tag questions. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to ask and answer questions confidently in conversations and writing.
Introduction
Asking questions is an important skill in English. Questions help us get information, clarify doubts, and communicate effectively. There are different ways to form questions depending on what you want to know.
Types of Questions
- Yes/No Questions: Questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no".
Example: Are you coming to the party? - Wh-Questions: Questions that begin with words like who, what, where, when, why, and how.
Example: Where do you live? - Tag Questions: Short questions added to the end of a statement to confirm information.
Example: You like music, don't you?
Forming Yes/No Questions
Use helping verbs (is, are, was, were, do, does, did, have, has, will, can, etc.) before the subject.
- Is she your sister?
- Do you play football?
- Have they finished their homework?
Forming Wh-Questions
Start with a wh-word, then add the helping verb and subject.
- What are you doing?
- Who is your best friend?
- How did you solve the problem?
Forming Tag Questions
Add a short question at the end of a statement. If the statement is positive, the tag is negative, and vice versa.
- It's raining, isn't it?
- You don't like tea, do you?
- She can swim, can't she?
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to use the helping verb in questions.
- Using the wrong word order.
- Incorrect tag formation.
Practice Questions
- Change to a yes/no question: She is reading a book.
- Make a wh-question: You went to the market. (Ask where)
- Add a tag question: They will come tomorrow.
- Change to a yes/no question: He has finished his work.
- Make a wh-question: She bought a new dress. (Ask what)
Challenge Yourself
- Write five wh-questions about your favorite hobby.
- Add tag questions to three statements of your own.
Did You Know?
- Tag questions are often used in conversation to check information or show interest.
- "Wh-" questions help you get detailed answers, not just yes or no.
