Introduction

Verbs are words that show actions, states, or occurrences. They are an essential part of every sentence and help us express what someone or something does, feels, or is.

Types of Verbs

  • Action Verbs: Show physical or mental actions (run, think, write).
  • Linking Verbs: Connect the subject to more information (am, is, are, was, were, seem, become).
  • Auxiliary (Helping) Verbs: Help the main verb (have, has, had, do, does, did, will, shall, can, may).
  • Transitive Verbs: Need an object (She reads a book).
  • Intransitive Verbs: Do not need an object (He sleeps).

Forms of Verbs

  • Base Form: The original form (go, eat, play).
  • Past Form: Shows an action that happened before (went, ate, played).
  • Past Participle: Used with helping verbs (gone, eaten, played).
  • Present Participle: Ends in -ing (going, eating, playing).

Tenses and Verbs

Verbs change form to show the time of action. The three main tenses are:

  • Present: I play.
