Pronouns

Welcome to the chapter on Pronouns for Class 1. In this chapter, you will learn what pronouns are, how to use them in sentences, and why they are important in English. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to use pronouns like "he", "she", "it", and "they" correctly!

Introduction

Pronouns are special words that take the place of nouns (naming words). They help us avoid repeating the same nouns again and again.

What are Pronouns?

Pronouns are words like he, she, it, they, I, we, you, and me.

  • He is used for a boy or man. (He is my brother.)
  • She is used for a girl or woman. (She is my sister.)
  • It is used for an animal or thing. (It is a cat.)
  • They is used for more than one person, animal, or thing. (They are my friends.)
  • I is used when you talk about yourself. (I am a student.)
  • We is used when you talk about yourself and others. (We are in class.)
  • You is used when you talk to someone. (You are my friend.)

Why Do We Use Pronouns?

Pronouns make sentences shorter and clearer. Instead of saying "Rita is a girl. Rita likes to play.", we can say "Rita is a girl. She likes to play."

Fun Activity: Replace the Noun!

Read these sentences and replace the underlined noun with a pronoun:
Rohan is running.
The cat is sleeping.
Rita and Sam are playing.

Summary

  • Pronouns take the place of nouns.
  • We use "he" for boys, "she" for girls, "it" for things and animals, and "they" for many.
  • Pronouns make sentences easy to read and say.
