Introduction
Verbs are action words. They tell us what someone or something does. Phrasal verbs are special phrases made by joining a verb with a preposition or an adverb, which gives a new meaning.
Types of Verbs
- Main Verbs: Show the main action or state. (e.g., run, eat, think)
- Helping Verbs: Help the main verb. (e.g., is, am, are, was, were, have, has, had, will, shall)
- Transitive Verbs: Need an object. (e.g., She reads a book.)
- Intransitive Verbs: Do not need an object. (e.g., He sleeps.)
What are Phrasal Verbs?
A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or adverb. The meaning is often different from the verb alone.
- Look after – to take care of (e.g., She looks after her brother.)
- Give up – to stop doing something (e.g., He gave up smoking.)
- Turn on – to start something (e.g., Please turn on the light.)
- Run out of – to have no more left (e.g., We ran out of milk.)
- Put off – to postpone (e.g., They put off the meeting.)
