Mathematics Class 5 - Computation Operations Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 5 - Computation Operations olympiad preparation

Computation Operations
Welcome to the chapter on Computation Operations for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn how to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve more complex problems. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to solve sums, word problems, and use the correct order of operations with confidence!
Introduction
Computation operations are the basic math actions we use every day. In Class 5, you will use these operations with bigger numbers and learn new ways to solve problems.
Addition
Addition means finding the total by putting numbers together. You will add large numbers and decimals.
- Example: 4,567 + 2,345 = 6,912
- Add numbers with carrying and decimals.
Subtraction
Subtraction means finding what is left after taking away. You will subtract large numbers and decimals.
- Example: 8,000 - 2,345 = 5,655
- Subtract numbers with borrowing and decimals.
Multiplication
Multiplication means adding the same number many times. You will multiply large numbers and decimals.
- Example: 123 × 45 = 5,535
- Multiply using column method and with decimals.
Division
Division means sharing or grouping numbers into equal parts. You will divide large numbers and decimals.
- Example: 1,200 ÷ 24 = 50
- Divide using long division and with decimals.
Order of Operations
When a sum has more than one operation, follow the correct order:
- Do brackets first.
- Then multiplication and division.
- Then addition and subtraction.
Example: (6 + 4) × 3 = 10 × 3 = 30
Example: 12 + 8 ÷ 2 = 12 + 4 = 16
Word Problems
Use computation operations to solve real-life problems. Read the question, choose the correct operation, and solve step by step.
- Example: A shopkeeper has 250 pencils. He sells 75 pencils each day for 4 days. How many pencils does he sell in total? (75 × 4 = 300)
- Does he have enough pencils? (250 < 300, so no)
Fun Activity: Operation Challenge!
Make a set of sums using all four operations and brackets. Solve them with your friends and check who gets the correct answers fastest!
Summary
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are computation operations.
- Use the correct order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS).
- Practice word problems to use math in real life.
Practice Questions
- Add: 5,678 + 2,345
- Subtract: 10,000 - 4,567
- Multiply: 234 × 12
- Divide: 1,440 ÷ 36
- Solve: (8 + 6) × 2
- Solve: 20 + 12 ÷ 4
Challenge Yourself
- Make your own word problem using three operations.
- Solve: (25 × 3) + (60 ÷ 5) - 10
