Mathematics Class 5 - Data Handling Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 5 - Data Handling olympiad preparation

Data Handling
Welcome to the chapter on Data Handling for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn how to collect, organize, and interpret data using tables, charts, and graphs. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to read and make pictographs, bar graphs, and answer questions about data!
Introduction
Data handling means working with information. We collect data, organize it, and show it in a way that is easy to understand. This helps us answer questions and solve problems.
Collecting Data
Data can be collected by asking questions, counting objects, or observing things around us.
- Example: Counting the number of red, blue, and green balls in a box.
- Surveying your classmates about their favorite fruit.
Organizing Data
After collecting data, we organize it in tables or lists to make it easy to read.
- Example: Making a table to show how many students like apples, bananas, or mangoes.
Pictographs
A pictograph uses pictures or symbols to show data. Each picture stands for a certain number.
- Example: 🍎 = 2 students
- If there are 3 🍎, it means 6 students like apples.
Bar Graphs
A bar graph uses bars of different lengths to show data. It helps us compare numbers easily.
- Example: A bar graph showing the number of books read by students in a month.
Interpreting Data
Interpreting data means looking at tables, pictographs, or bar graphs and answering questions about them.
- Which fruit is liked by the most students?
- How many students like bananas?
Fun Activity: Make Your Own Graph!
Ask your friends about their favorite color. Make a table and draw a bar graph to show the results!
Summary
- Data handling means collecting, organizing, and interpreting information.
- We use tables, pictographs, and bar graphs to show data.
- Graphs help us compare and understand data easily.
Practice Questions
- Make a table showing the number of pets your friends have.
- Draw a pictograph for the number of apples, bananas, and oranges sold in a shop.
- Draw a bar graph for the number of books read by students in a week.
- Which fruit is liked by the most students in your class?
- How can you collect data about your classmates’ favorite games?
Challenge Yourself
- Make a survey about your classmates’ favorite subjects and show the results in a bar graph.
- Interpret a pictograph and answer three questions about it.
Did You Know?
- Data handling is used in sports, weather reports, and even in shops!
- Scientists use graphs to show their findings.
Glossary
- Data: Information collected for study.
- Pictograph: A graph that uses pictures to show data.
- Bar Graph: A graph that uses bars to show data.
- Interpret: To understand and explain the meaning of something.
Answers to Practice Questions
- (Make a table with names and number of pets.)
- (Draw pictures for each fruit and show the number sold.)
- (Draw bars for each student and number of books read.)
- (Check your table or graph to find the answer.)
- By asking questions and writing down the answers.
Practice data handling to become a smart data detective!
