Mathematics Class 5 - Weight Notes
Comprehensive study notes for Class 5 - Weight olympiad preparation

Weight
Welcome to the chapter on Weight for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn how to measure weight, use different units, compare weights, and solve word problems. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to measure and calculate weight confidently!
Introduction
Weight tells us how heavy or light something is. We measure weight using different units and tools. Knowing about weight helps us in shopping, cooking, and many daily activities.
Units of Weight
- Gram (g): Used for light objects like a pencil or an eraser.
- Kilogram (kg): Used for heavier objects like a bag of rice or a person.
- Milligram (mg): Used for very light things like medicine.
Measuring Weight
We use weighing scales to measure weight. There are different types of scales for different uses.
- Kitchen scale for food items
- Bathroom scale for people
- Balance scale for small objects
Converting Units
Sometimes, we need to change one unit to another:
- 1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g)
- 1 gram (g) = 1000 milligrams (mg)
Example: 2 kg = 2000 g
Comparing Weights
We can compare the weight of two or more objects to see which is heavier or lighter.
- A watermelon is heavier than an apple.
- A feather is lighter than a book.
Word Problems
Use your knowledge of weight to solve real-life problems. Read the question, choose the correct unit, and solve.
- Example: If a bag weighs 3 kg and a box weighs 1500 g, which is heavier?
- Example: If you buy 2 kg of apples and 500 g of bananas, what is the total weight?
Fun Activity: Weigh and Compare!
Find different objects at home and weigh them using a kitchen scale. Make a list from lightest to heaviest!
Summary
- Weight tells us how heavy or light something is.
- We use grams, kilograms, and milligrams to measure weight.
- Practice converting units and solving word problems.
Practice Questions
- Convert: 4 kg = ____ g
- Which is heavier: 2500 g or 2 kg?
- If a packet weighs 750 g and another weighs 1 kg, what is their total weight in grams?
- What tool do you use to measure your own weight?
- Arrange these from lightest to heaviest: 500 mg, 2 g, 1 kg
Challenge Yourself
- Make your own word problem using kilograms and grams.
- Find the weight of five things at home and write them in order.
Did You Know?
- The largest fruit, the pumpkin, can weigh over 1000 kg!
- Gold is weighed in grams and kilograms, but also in ounces and carats.
