Perimeter of Various Shapes & Area of Rectangle and Square

Perimeter of Various Shapes

  • Perimeter of a Rectangle: 2 × (length + breadth)
  • Perimeter of a Triangle: Sum of all three sides
  • Perimeter of a Regular Polygon: Number of sides × length of one side

Example: A rectangle with length 8 cm and breadth 5 cm.
Perimeter = 2 × (8 + 5) = 2 × 13 = 26 cm

Area of Rectangle and Square

Area tells us how much space is inside a shape.

  • Area of a Rectangle: length × breadth
  • Area of a Square: side × side

Example: A square with side 6 cm.
Area = 6 × 6 = 36 cm²

Example: A rectangle with length 7 cm and breadth 4 cm.
Area = 7 × 4 = 28 cm²

Word Problems

Use perimeter and area to solve real-life problems. Read the question, choose the correct formula, and solve.

  • Example: If you want to put a fence around a garden that is 10 m long and 8 m wide, what is the length of the fence needed? (Perimeter = 2 × (10 + 8) = 36 m)
  • Example: If you want to cover a floor with tiles and the floor is a rectangle of 12 m by 5 m, what is the area to be covered? (Area = 12 × 5 = 60 m²)
