Temperature and Money

Welcome to the chapter on Temperature and Money for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn how to read and compare temperatures, understand how money is used, and solve problems related to both. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to use temperature and money in real-life situations and solve word problems confidently!

Introduction

Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. Money is what we use to buy things. Both are important in our daily life. Let’s learn how to read, compare, and use them!

Temperature

Temperature is measured using a thermometer. The unit for temperature is degree Celsius (°C) or degree Fahrenheit (°F).

  • Water boils at 100°C and freezes at 0°C.
  • Normal body temperature is about 37°C.
  • We use thermometers to check the temperature of air, water, or our body.

Reading a Thermometer

Look at the scale on the thermometer. The number where the liquid stops is the temperature.

  • If the liquid stops at 25, the temperature is 25°C.
  • Compare temperatures to know which is hotter or colder.

Comparing Temperatures

Higher numbers mean it is hotter. Lower numbers mean it is colder.

  • 30°C is hotter than 20°C.
  • 10°C is colder than 15°C.

Money

Money is used to buy things. In India, we use rupees (₹) and paise. Money can be coins or notes.

  • Common coins: ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10
  • Common notes: ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹500

Counting Money

Add the value of coins and notes to find the total amount.

  • ₹10 + ₹20 = ₹30
  • ₹5 + ₹5 + ₹10 = ₹20

Using Money

We use money to buy things, pay bills, and save for the future. Subtract the price from the money you have to find out how much is left.

  • If you have ₹50 and buy a toy for ₹30, you have ₹20 left.

Word Problems

Use temperature and money to solve real-life problems. Read the question, choose the correct operation, and solve.

  • Example (Temperature): If the morning temperature is 18°C and the afternoon temperature is 28°C, how much did it increase? (28°C - 18°C = 10°C)
  • Example (Money): If you buy a book for ₹45 and a pen for ₹15, how much do you spend in total? (₹45 + ₹15 = ₹60)

Fun Activity: Money and Temperature Hunt!

Find the temperature at different times of the day. Count the coins and notes you have at home. Write down your findings!
