Mathematics Class 5 - Conversions Notes

Comprehensive study notes for Class 5 - Conversions olympiad preparation

Conversions

Welcome to the chapter on Conversions for Class 5. In this chapter, you will learn how to change one unit into another, such as length, weight, and time. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to convert units confidently and solve word problems using conversions!

Introduction

Conversions help us change measurements from one unit to another. We use conversions in daily life, like changing meters to centimeters or hours to minutes.

Length Conversions

Length is measured in millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), and kilometers (km).

  • 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm)
  • 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)
  • 1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm)

Example: Convert 3 meters to centimeters.
3 m × 100 = 300 cm

Weight Conversions

Weight is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg).

  • 1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g)

Example: Convert 2 kg to grams.
2 kg × 1000 = 2000 g

Time Conversions

Time is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years.

  • 1 minute = 60 seconds
  • 1 hour = 60 minutes
  • 1 day = 24 hours
  • 1 week = 7 days

Example: Convert 3 hours to minutes.
3 hours × 60 = 180 minutes

Money Conversions

Money is measured in rupees and paise.

  • 1 rupee = 100 paise

Example: Convert 5 rupees to paise.
5 × 100 = 500 paise

Word Problems

Use conversions to solve real-life problems. Read the question, choose the correct conversion, and solve.

  • Example: If a ribbon is 250 cm long, how many meters is it?
    250 cm ÷ 100 = 2.5 m
  • Example: If a bag weighs 3000 g, how many kilograms is it?
    3000 g ÷ 1000 = 3 kg

Fun Activity: Conversion Hunt!

Find things at home and measure their length, weight, or time. Convert the measurements to different units!
